What is
work
placement ?

Work placement refers to a period of structured, supervised work experience in a real workplace. Work placements are designed to provide students with hands on experience, allowing them to develop practical skills, gain industry insights and understand workplace expectations.

Work placement can be an essential component of many VET courses, where students apply the knowledge and skills learned in their training to real-world work. In some circumstances, work placement may be compulsory for your chosen VET course. Depending on your pathway, your work placement may be recognised against your Senior Secondary Certificate.

Why
should
I do it?

  • Develop confidence in the workplace.

  • Gain experience to include in your resume.

  • Obtain an industry-based reference.

  • Learn about industry practices and procedures.

  • Apply skills and knowledge obtained in the classroom to the work environment.

How do I find a work placement?

  • Students are encouraged to approach potential host employers.

  • Speak to your school’s career advisor for advice and support.

  • Visit the Department of Education's School to Work portal. This is a statewide resource. All LLENs across the state collaborate with local employers to host students and available vacancies are listed on the portal.
